CRITICAL-POWER RESILIENCE

Zero-downtime power for hospitals — Solar + Battery + Generator resilience

Hospitals cannot lose power. LEONICS delivers grid-interactive PV + battery + generator so critical loads — ICU, operating theatres, imaging, and the cold chain — ride through grid failures seamlessly, with solar cutting the round-the-clock bill. Proven at Dhulikhel Hospital, Nepal.

Design figures for a system sized to this use case. What a given site actually gets depends on its load shape, the PV and battery sizing and its tariff — the worked examples below show the inputs.

The Challenge

A hospital cannot lose power — an outage threatens operating theatres, ICUs, and the vaccine/blood cold chain, yet diesel-only backup is costly and slow to switch over.

  • Zero downtime — Operating rooms, ICU, and life-support cannot tolerate an outage — even a few seconds is dangerous.
  • Unreliable grid — In many regions the grid fails often, so the hospital must be able to rely on itself.
  • Diesel-only isn’t enough — Gensets alone have a transfer delay, high fuel cost, and emissions.
  • Cold-chain at risk — Vaccines, medicines, and blood need uninterrupted refrigeration — even a short outage causes loss.
  • Costly critical load — Running critical loads on diesel over the long term is expensive.
Hospital backup — four sources, one inverter, no transfer gap

Solar and battery join on the DC side; grid and genset tap the AC bus. The critical bus is fed through one grid-interactive inverter.

Hospital backup power architectureA PV rooftop and a LiFePO4 battery connect on the DC side; the utility grid and an integrated diesel generator connect on the AC side. One grid-interactive inverter manages all four. On a grid failure it transfers to the battery in under 10 ms, so theatres, ICU and servers never drop, and the genset starts only for an extended outage.Solar Rooftopsized to daytime loadBatteryLiFePO4 · instant backupGrid-interactive Inverterseamless transfer < 10 msGridMEA / PEADiesel gensetextended outages onlyCritical loadstheatre · ICU · serversDCAC1DC→ACFour sources meet at one inverter; the critical bus never sees the changeDCAC
